Richard Grossman, KO6AUH, Silent Key

Richard D. Grossman, KO6AUH, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2024, at the age of 94.
His wife of 66 years, Dixie, sent this remembrance of Dick:
“He had a degree in Engineering Physics and spent most of his working career as a Forensic Engineer, doing accident reconstruction for client attorneys. Being retired was not to his liking, but one day his attention was drawn to an old short wave radio which had lain dormant in our home for decades. Suddenly he was off and running: new equipment was being purchased as well as books, magazines, etc.
“At some point he made contact with your fine organization, and passed the first two tests (Technician and General), and received his license which enabled him to broadcast! He spent many an hour in his former office, now called the “shack.”
“I don’t know how anyone can listen to that much static, but every now and then he would be pleased to report that he’d made contact with someone local or even in another state: Texas, New Jersey, or maybe Fargo, North Dakota!
“Richard and I celebrated our 66th wedding anniversary in July. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He was much loved and is greatly missed. He is survived by his wife, Dixie, two sons, a daughter and seven grandchildren.”
Richard L. Donner, WA6KYR, Silent Key
With great sadness we report the passing on July 12, 2024, of Richard L. Donner, WA6KYR, 79, following a long battle with prostate cancer.

Richard became a ham in 1960, and qualified for his general class license the following year, while still in high school. He then went to UCLA, where he received a degree in engineering in 1967, earned a Master’s degree in 1972, and began a long and successful career as an educator.
He got even more active in our hobby and our club following his retirement in 2010, and especially enjoyed operate portable stations for SOTA (Summits On The Air) contacts, usually via Morse Code QRP (low power).
He also built beautifully crafted AM crystal radios, which he described in a 2023 presentation to W6SD that is available on YouTube.
W6SD sends our condolences to his wife, Andrea, who made it possible for Richard to continue to enjoy ham radio despite his illness, and to his family.
